Consumer appliances continues good performance in 2011
In spite of the euro crisis the consumer appliances market still performed healthily in Germany, showing an increase in both volume and value sales in 2011. The near zero inflation, healthy growth in the German economy, and falling unemployment rates all contributed to stronger consumer confidence which boosted their purchase of big-ticket items, including various consumer appliances. In major appliances, the best performance was seen in home laundry products, while large kitchen and refrigeration appliances showed somewhat restrained growth due to saturation.

Design and technological innovations drive growth
For products where the penetration rate is already high, manufacturers are trying to encourage consumers to replace their older appliances by coming up with new features. In particular for major appliances, energy-efficiency is a key purchase driver for the replacement of old appliances, but this feature alone is no longer sufficient to lure consumers. Manufacturers have had to offer improved functionality incorporating modern technology and trendy designs. The bigger manufacturers have an edge over smaller companies in consumer appliances, as they have the budget to continue investing in research and development in order to come up with innovative product launches.

Market Opportunities and Emerging Trends in the Prepaid Card Market in the Middle East

Payroll cards are becoming increasingly widespread in the UAE, driven by the government-mandated wages protection system (WPS). The UAE’s banking structure, albeit fragmented, is a mixture of both private and public banks. Jebel Ali, one of the mid-market malls in the UAE, is considered a pioneer of the prepaid cards industry in the country. Saudi Arabia’s young population is driving considerable investment into the country’s prepaid cards market which provides the potential for youth-targeted prepaid cards. The market for prepaid cards in Saudi Arabia was found to be negligible with a minimal percentage of prepaid gift cards in supply. The country has a healthy influx of tourists for the Islamic holy cities such as Mecca, Jeddah and Riyadh. Tourist prepaid cards are expected to drive the Saudi Arabian market. On the other hand, the prepaid card market in Egypt is still in its developmental stages. The market received support in 2008 and 2009 when the government made concerted efforts to increase the penetration rates of e-banking across the country. However, the market was adversely affected by the uprisings against the Hosni Mubarak government in early 2011. At present there are a small number of prepaid card programs in Egypt, primarily offered by banks.

Highlights
Amazon has recorded a marginal decline of three points in its overall score of 163. However, this is enough to regain second place, having dipped to third last time, thanks to Asda’s fall from second to seventh place.
As was the case in 2011, Comet and Currys have posted the two highest scores for range at 44 and 40 points respectively. As specialists, the two retailers are able to dedicate their entire estates' floorspace to electricals, allowing them to stock a wider range of items.
Asda has yet again come out top for price, despite a drop of nine points to 62. However, the strength of its price-oriented strategy may have obscured other attributes.

UK Reinsurance Market to 2016

During the review period, premium ceded to reinsurance by UK direct insurers grew, with the exception of a noticeable decline in 2009 as a result of the global financial crisis. Following European financial liberalization, the UK insurance industry was opened up to international reinsurers and brokers. The UK reinsurance segment is dominated by domestic reinsurers, as well as reinsurers from other European countries such as Germany. Due to the impact of the global financial crisis, the European debt crisis and severe flooding in 2010–2011, renewal prices increased in the UK reinsurance segment. Previously, during 2009–2010, UK reinsurance brokers experienced increased demand from credit insurers keen to minimize their risk by sharing it with a reinsurer. Furthermore, with the forthcoming introduction of the Solvency II directive, many insurers are also expected to be dependent on reinsurers in order to ensure better risk management and retain their market positions.

Key Highlights
• During the review period (2007–2011), the growth in non-life insurance premiums was fuelled by numerous instances of severe flooding in the UK.
